NEWS: APS Developing a Novel Offshore Wind Turbine Platform Under Continued DARPA Support
APS is completing the first year of a Phase II SBIR for the DARPA Strategic Technology Office for a Mobile Offshore Platform for Wind Turbine Power Generation. The effort answers a Department of Defense need for a persistent, mobile power generating capability to service offshore bases and other temporary or mobile installations. Along with the challenges associated with seakeeping, stability, and mobility, the need to maintain station with an unmoored wind turbine platform represents a significant hurdle in developing a successful system. APS is developing a novel passive stationkeeping system to meet the stationkeeping demands of a wind turbine platform while maintaining surplus power generation. The present year’s effort includes experimental demonstration of the component technologies, while the upcoming year will showcase these technologies in a scaled-prototype open-water system demonstration of a wind turbine platform.
