NEWS: Marine Species Mitigation Team Earns 2009 CNO Environmental Award
Applied Physical Sciences Corp. is part of a team of researchers that earned an award in the 2009 Chief of Naval Operations Environmental Awards Competition. As part of the Marine Species Mitigation team lead by Naval Air Systems Command PMA264, APS performed research and field testing to help the Navy better understand marine mammal populations on U.S. Navy acoustic test ranges and other areas in which training exercises may be performed. APS designed and built a novel passive sonar system that was designed to work in deepwater. This purpose-designed sonar includes a 4-channel tetrahederal array of hydrophones and a processor that automatically detects, classifies and tracks the echo-location clicks from marine mammals such as Blainville's and Cuvier's beaked whales.
