Applied Physical Sciences is looking for a highly motivated systems engineer to join our Groton, CT team.  Successful candidates will have a BS, MS, or PhD degree in electrical engineering or ocean engineering with a focus in any of the following: underwater acoustics, marine electronics systems, sonar signal processing, or wireless communications.   Professional experience of 5 to 10 years is required, however we will consider less experience for highly qualified candidates.  Successful applicants will support the development of state-of-the-art underwater sensing and communication systems for autonomous underwater vehicles, undersea systems, and other marine applications.  Knowledge of array processing, acoustic communications, underwater propagation modeling, signal detection, embedded systems, and data acquisition is a plus.  APS works on exciting, technically challenging, cutting-edge technologies that will expose candidates to a wide variety of multidisciplinary fields and allow for unique growth opportunities and learning experiences.  APS provides a small company environment where technical excellence is rewarded and an entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged, and candidates will have a chance to work directly with colleagues and customers that value innovation and creativity.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design and development of innovative communication systems for challenging subsea applications (60%)
  • Signal processing and data analysis (20%)
  • Project leadership (20%)

 

Required Attributes and Skills:

  • BS, MS or PhD in ocean engineering or electrical engineering
  • Expert Matlab programming skills
  • Several years’ experience developing and/or designing marine and/or sonar systems
  • Working knowledge of digital and analog circuits
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and oral) to lead meetings and prepare written briefs for internal reviews and with customers

 

Desired Attributes and Skills Include Experience With Several of the Following:

  • Designing/implementing algorithms for adaptive equalization
  • Advanced channel coding methods
  • Acoustic propagation models such as SST, BELLHOP, RAY, CASS/GRAB or similar
  • Designing/implementing detection, communication, or classification algorithms
  • Localization methods including beamforming
  • Performance modeling of hydrophone and transducer arrays
  • Hardware/software design for unmanned underwater vehicles
  • Developing technical content for new products, ideas, or other business development pursuits
