Applied Physical Sciences is looking for a highly motivated communications design engineer to join our Groton, CT or Arlington, VA teams.  Successful candidates will have a MS or PhD degree in electrical engineering with a focus in wireless communications and/or signal processing.  Professional experience of 3 to 5 years is preferred, but not required.  Successful applicants will support the development of a state-of-the-art sensing and communication systems for autonomous underwater vehicles, undersea systems, and other marine applications.  Knowledge of array processing, acoustic communications, underwater propagation modeling, signal detection, embedded systems, and data acquisition a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and development of innovative communication systems for underwater (50%)
  • Signal processing and data analysis (30%)
  • Project leadership (20%)

Required Attributes and Skills:

  • MS or PhD in electrical engineering
  • Expert Matlab programming skills
  • Expert C/C++ and Linux programming skills
  • Several years’ experience developing and/or designing communications systems for wireless and/or underwater applications
  • Experience designing/implementing algorithms for adaptive equalization
  • Experience simulating and assessing communication system performance including bit error rate, probability of detection/interception, and medium access protocols
  • Experience with design and simulation of wireless communication channels to be used for system performance characterization
  • Working knowledge of digital and analog circuits
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and oral) to lead meetings and prepare written briefs for internal reviews and with customers

Desired Attributes and Skills:

  • MS or PhD in ocean engineering or electrical engineering (signal processing focus)
  • Prior experience with underwater propagation models
  • Prior experience with GNU Radio and Software Defined Radio hardware
  • Prior experience designing software/electronics systems for unmanned underwater vehicles
  • Prior experience in design and development of underwater acoustic sensors
  • Prior experience creating technical content for new products, ideas, or other business development pursuits
  • Prior experience with development of algorithms for any of the following: detection, localization, classification, tracking
