APS specializes in the design, fabrication and use of what are commonly referred to as “vector sensors”.  Vector sensors measure both acoustic pressure and it’s spatial derivatives  - or equivalently, particle motion - in a compact footprint.  This allows for the reconstruction of a measured acoustic field throughout a volume local to the sensor, paving the way for new and improved detection and localization schemes.

APS has built a wide variety of vector sensors for applications ranging from passive, low-frequency ASW to ultrasonic active sonar.  APS uses custom derived analytic models of piezoelectric structures and single-crystal accelerometers as well as finite element analysis to design our sensors and predict performance.  Pictures and detailed descriptions of vector sensors built by APS are available on our manufacturing.
